Oddly enough, a record that my grandmother had in her collection, that I have no idea what happened to, and that I haven't listened to in the past 30 years until buying last month on Discogs from a guy in Ontario, has been helping me and my family over the past 4 days in getting through the strange times we are living in. So, I can't help but share it with you. This has really brightened up our evenings.
From the Stompin' Tom Connors 'Souvenir' album
(25 songs, from the late 60's through the early 70's):
I hope you'll appreciate this, on one level or another, for what it is.
Canada from East to West: according to the man who smoked five and half packs a day.
To It And At It - sums up Eastern Canada (the Maritime Provinces and Quebec) pretty well I think: one of Renee's favourites on the album:
Sudbury Saturday Night - Ontario - one of my favourites
Zakuska Polka - The Prairie Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) - a tip of the hat to the Ukrainians in Canada: the one-quarter of my family I am most connected with. I love this. We sent this song out to some of our friends on the day that Stompin' Tom passed away.
The Bridge Came Tumbling Down - BC - where I was born:
Stompin' Tom had some great tribute songs to Canadian music icons:
The Don Messer Story:
Tribute To Wilf Carter:
But, he made most of his money off some of his songs that were only more generally Canadian:
The Consumer: theme song from Marketplace: another one my favourites, and in the chorus it features his famous stompin' board:
The Hockey Song
...and finally, I include this one only because I performed live at a bluegrass festival a long time ago with the BC man (Keray Regan) who wrote the following song (one of the rare Stompin' Tom songs that Stompin' Tom didn't write himself):
Poor, Poor Farmer
Thanks for indulging me here on this.
All the best, my friends.
Keep safe and well.
