Beginners jam and workshop
SLOW JAM at Cobby's These sessions will get you started on bluegrass jam sessions, and help you to integrate into the IBA’s ongoing jams. We will start with basic and classic bluegrass songs using two or three chords. They will be played slowly at first, gradually building in speed as everyone catches on. We will emphasize the basic elements of a jam session – maintaining steady rhythm, giving phrases the right number of beats, how to lead a song, signaling when to take a solo, and finally how to start and end songs. All traditional bluegrass instruments are welcome, but if you don’t play guitar, upright bass, electric bass, Dobro, mandolin, banjo or fiddle, don’t let that stop you. Participants should have a reasonable command of basic chords on their instrument, or some basic scales if playing a melodic instrument like fiddle. This is not intended to be a class on how to play your particular instrument, but how to play along with others and make group music. We will work mostly in the key of G (primary chords are G, C and D), and the key of D (D, G and A). Later we will cover the key of A (chords are A, D and E), and the key of C (chords are C, F and G). A list of songs is posted on the IBA website as PDF’s for you to download and print for yourself beforehand. There is no photocopier on site. You can listen to the music on YouTube or buy the albumns. Song List - Words, Chords, and Music for Jam Songs More Jam Songs
